I tend to have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I do not appreciate the militarization of the police. On the other, can you blame them very much when their job makes them feel endangered? Cops have one goal in their job: Don’t get killed. Nobody wants to be on the receiving end of a police funeral. Cops are scared. The mob mentality in this country and the wicked politicians pandering to that mob are putting them in a very dangerous place.
It’s been said before: the reason blacks seem to be targeted so much is that black communities are generating a lot of the crime. This is directly attributable to the disintegration of the black family. Fatherless kids seem doomed to poverty, vice, and violence. When these damaged boys become sexually mature, they get the emotionally vulnerable girls around them knocked up, disappear, and then the cycle repeats itself. So much of this vitriol is just a case of the black community blaming law enforcement for their own failings. It’s time to lay blame where it belongs. Maybe we could start with Al Sharpton.

I personally think both sides of this are overreacting. The truth is, Christmas is a myth. It is not a primarily religious holiday, but more a pseudo-Christian, European traditional holiday (sort of like Independence Day or Thanksgiving in America). It is not known for sure exactly when Jesus was born, but the best evidence favors the Spring, during the lambing season in Israel, which is appropriate considering He is the “Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world.”
Christmas borrows from a variety of cultural traditions, some of them originally pagan. Insisting that some people are trying to “take Christ out of Christmas” or that there is a “War on Christmas” is silly, because there’s little of Christ in Christmas anyway. I have preserved some of the best elements of traditional Christmas for my family, and have made it about remembering the birth of Christ. I use it as an illustration of how God gave us the gift of His only begotten Son. It has become necessary to make the holiday MORE Christian, you see. However, it is not mandated in Scripture, and the early Christians did not commemorate the birth of Christ at all. Don’t make Christmas more than it is. As for the Atheists, come on guys – when will you learn that mocking other people’s religions is no way to promote your own?

I’m Walking Here! How it feels to be a pedestrian in cities today
How did we get in this mess? Simple: because the elegant, electric trolly car systems operating in many of America’s major cities nearly 100 years ago were bought out by the automotive and oil industries, then summarily executed, forcing Americans to buy cars and consume oil. Conspiracy theory? Not at all.
Our cities should be laid out to favor pedestrian traffic first, motorists second, in a manner that allows both groups to co-exist safely and productively. In a city, you should rarely ever need to drive, unless you’re traveling across country. Everything needs to be arranged around blocks, with all the major needs (food, clothing, energy) within easy walking distance. Big Oil, Big Auto, Big Agro are swollen ticks on the nation, existing to benefit themselves, not us.
What if you could walk to most stores? What if there were open air markets and in-season produce grown in-state for sale? Think of the health benefits. Think of the cost savings in road maintenance, healthcare and pollution reduction. Think of the expansion of green spaces and landscaping (pedestrian-friendly layouts have to look nice, since you’re able to actually SEE your surroundings as you travel). Healthier, happier, more productive people.
It would restore the sense of community our grandparents once enjoyed, because when you walk everywhere, you have no choice but to learn how to talk to people and be pleasant. You get to know your shopkeepers. You’re not reduced to disconnected blocks of merchandise you reach through engaging your “neighbors” in aggressive automotive combat. Seems like a good deal to me.
